If you were born in the late-60's or early 70's, chances are good you got up early on Saturday mornings and immediately turned on the TV for the tubes to warm up, and in case you had a bad one, you could replace it, or rush to the local Thrifty and get one. Bowls of sugar were added to bowls of already sugar-saturated cereal. The usual pecking order, or in this case, slapping, slugging, verbal abuse, and kicking order, was maintained by the older, bigger kids. Likewise for the channel selections and seating arrangements. The older teenagers and adults were either crashed out, or as often as not, still partying... somewhere. All the fuss hopefully subsided by the time our week-long anticipated shows came on.There were so many out there, and everyone of course had their faves. Warner Bros. Hanna-Barbera. Bob Clampett. Sid & Marty Kroft. Jay Ward. Japanese stuff. Bugs Bunny. Daffy Duck. Beany and Cecil. Fat Albert. Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. Scooby-Doo. Rocky and Bullwinkle. Speed Racer. On and on. In addition to the studios, comic book characters were plentiful as well. Animated and live-action. Some shows were avoided entirely, or turned on to make fun of and laugh at, with The Donny and Marie Show being at the top of the list. In my world, watching Donny and Marie for any other purpose was punished quickly and severely. Despite the occasional hazards and blunt-force trauma involved, it was a time when life was simple and carefree.I wax nostalgic because I recently discovered a CD made in 1995 called "Saturday Morning: Cartoons' Greatest Hits." I can't believe this one got by me, but I'm glad to have finally found it. The album is a compilation of 19 theme songs from, you guessed it, Saturday morning shows, that were redone by various mostly Generation-X alternative and punk acts, who all did a wonderful job re-interpreting the songs in their own special way. To me, it is a complete playthrough and there's not a slack song in the bunch. It's an excellent way to bring back innocent childhood memories while you're doing something that involves destruction of something, or drowning out annoying noises of any kind.
